Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the cavity of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the walls of the uterus.
This can cause painful, heavy periods and an enlarged uterus.
It is still unknown what causes adenomyosis, but this condition usually resolves after menopause.
Hormonal medications are used to treat the pain and limit the progression of the condition.
